‘In the Fold’ is a fabric line with deliverables consisting of fabric swatches, a catalogue and lookbook, inspired by my surroundings and cultural upbringing.
The scope of the project includes creating the fabric patterns and textile swatches themselves, as well as a full catalogue detailing the collection including photography, typography and fabric information to accompany. All elements come together to create the overall brand identity.
Process
Step 1
Ideate using sketching to determine the vibe and layout of the patterns. This step was done digitally, mostly using Procreate. During this time is where I also played with colour to determine the palette used throughout each pattern. I took inspiration from many areas, including personal taste, personal experiences, visual inspiration around me, and my environmental contexts.
Step 2
After ideation, I decided to explore several ideas and develop them into more detailed patterns. This step was more time consuming but helped to narrow down different elements I wanted to keep and omit. It also helped with colour combinations.
Step 3
Still using Procreate, I continued developing each final pattern individually in stages. Each pattern varied in time it took to create. They each also vary in complexity and colour. A lot of this process was trial and error to see how best to format the pattern and tile it for an accurate repeat.
Step 4
Using Photoshop, I altered the pattern to create three distinct colour ways for each.
Step 5
Finally, I printed swatches of each pattern in all the colour ways. I assembled them into swatch decks so that people can physically feel and see the patterns in person applied to the substrate.
